Mini-Symposium & Panel Discussion: New Zealand Earthquakes (February 2017)

On February 2, The EERI New York – Northeast (NYNE) Chapter hosted a joint event with the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) organization: “Mini-symposium on the 2010-11 and 2016 New Zealand earthquakes, and their implications to New York City (NYC) seismic risk and associated codes”. The NYNE Younger Members Committee (YMC) organized the mini-symposium, which was attended by over 180 engineers, city officials, and interested public. The event included two parts: (1) presentations on the NZ events by distinguished speakers: Professors Tom O’Rourke, Jonathan Bray, Brendon Bradley, and Ellen Rathje; and (2) panel discussion on the relation to the NYC risk and code needs with EERI Past President Prof. Mary Comerio, Prof. Andrew Whittaker, Dr. David Wald, Mr. Ramon Gilsanz, and Dr. Sissy Nikolaou.

The event took place in the magnificent Library of General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, which generously offered their space at no cost and whose staff kindly offered their time to ensure that our event was a success. The event was sponsored by Platinum Sponsor WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff , Gold Sponsors GMS and Exponent, Silver Sponsors ASCE Geo-Institute EESD Committee and SEAoNY, and Bronze Sponsors Institute of Civil Engineers, SOM, SGH, MRCE and JUNMA.

EERI-NYNE would like to thank the sponsors and volunteers for this event, the staff of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesman, and the EERI-NYNE Younger Members Committee. In addition, EERI-NYNE would like to thank the distinguished presenters and panelists for traveling from all over the US to participate in this event.
